It was not the ideal conclusion to his India career, but Rohan Bopanna accepted his early exit from the Paris Olympics, embracing the dream he lived for 22 years.

Bopanna and N Sriram Balaji were defeated by French players Edouard Roger-Vasselin and Gael Monfils in the first round of men's doubles under lights at court 12 on Sunday.

India's quest for an Olympic tennis medal has been unfulfilled since Leander Paes' singles bronze in the 1996 Atlanta Games. Bopanna narrowly missed breaking the jinx in 2016, finishing fourth with Sania Mirza in the mixed event.
