Michael Jung Makes History with Triple Olympic Eventing Title
Michael Jung clinched his fourth Olympic gold medal by becoming the first rider to win the individual eventing title three times. The German rider, who also won in 2012 and 2016, celebrated jubilantly with his horse, Chipmunk, and received his award at the Palace of Versailles. He finished ahead of Australian Christopher Burton and Britain's Laura Collett.
Michael Jung cemented his status as an Olympic legend by securing his fourth gold medal in individual eventing, marking the third time he has won the title. This historic win makes Jung the first rider to achieve such a feat.
The 41-year-old German triumphed in the eventing category at the 2012, 2016, and now the most recent Olympics. Jung has accumulated an impressive five Olympic medals over his career, including a silver in the 2016 team eventing.
After completing the decisive jumping section at the Palace of Versailles on Monday, Jung celebrated by jubilantly punching the air and affectionately kissing his horse, Chipmunk. He then removed his helmet and waved to the cheering crowd, as fellow German team members erupted in celebration beside the course.
Jung narrowly edged out Australian rider Christopher Burton, who earned silver on Shadow Man, and British rider Laura Collett, who took bronze on London 52.
The competition included three sections: the rain-soaked dressage on Saturday, cross country on Sunday, and the final jumping section on Monday. Riders competed against the clock, with penalties assigned for knocking down obstacles or exceeding the time limit. Jung's score of 21.80 bested Burton's 22.40 and Collett's 23.10.
The medal ceremony concluded with the riders galloping several laps to the applause and admiration of the crowd.
