The U.S. women's volleyball team had a rocky start in their Olympic title defense but managed to keep hope alive despite a close call.
Facing China in a critical pool play match, the Americans lost the first two sets but clawed back to win the third. The reigning champions eventually succumbed in the deciding fifth set, leaving both teams with an equal total of points scored. 'I'm really proud of our fight,' said setter Jordyn Poulter. 'It's not easy to go from being down 0-2 to fighting neck-and-neck in the fifth like that.'
Despite the loss, the team drew positives from their performance. Blocker Haleigh Washington noted, 'Going five with a team like China is incredible, and squeezing out any point in the pool is going to be really important for us.' With upcoming matches against Serbia and host France, the U.S. aims to improve its standing in the group stage.
Coach Karch Kiraly praised his team's resilience, saying, 'It is not easy to come back from down 2-0 against a really good China team.' Having eight holdovers from their 2021 gold medal win, the U.S. team remains optimistic about their chances moving forward.
