For the first time in competitive matches, select doubles teams at this week's Washington Open will wear microphones as part of a trial aimed at enhancing the fan experience, the governing body of men's tennis (ATP) announced. The trial, mirroring practices in NBA and Formula 1, aims to offer fans deeper insights into tactical discussions during tournament play.

The recorded conversations will be made available on ATP's digital platforms throughout the event, running from July 29 to August 4. 'The 2024 ATP Doubles Trial with player-worn microphones presents a transformative opportunity for players, fans, and the sport as a whole,' stated ATP chief sporting officer Ross Hutchins.

The trial also introduces shorter intervals between points, changeovers, and unrestricted crowd movement on the sides of the court. Similar trials have been conducted this season in Madrid, London, Hamburg, Gstaad, Newport, and Kitzbuehel.
