CAS to Expedite Ruling on Canadian Appeal for Beijing 2022 Bronze Medal
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has requested the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to quickly rule on Canada's appeal for the bronze medal in the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics after a Russian doping case. The U.S. and Japan are already set to receive their upgraded medals in August.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has called on sport's highest court to expedite a ruling on Canada's appeal to be awarded the bronze medal in the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics figure skating team event after a Russian doping case, according to an announcement on Tuesday.
Already, the IOC has arranged a medal ceremony in Paris on August 7, where the U.S. figure skating team will claim their gold medals, and Japan will be awarded the silver, both upgrades stemming from the disqualification of the Russian team. The Canadian team, initially fourth, hopes to be promoted to bronze. Currently, the International Skating Union (ISU) claims that even without Valieva's scores, the Russian team remains ahead of Canada by a single point.
IOC spokesperson Mark Adams emphasized the urgency, stating, "We really hope CAS gets it done quickly. Everybody wants it to happen." The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has the final say in this appeal, independent of the IOC. Adams underscored that although the IOC prefers a swift resolution, the decision ultimately lies with CAS.
