Neeraj Chopra's broad shoulders will carry the weight of massive expectations as his renowned consistency undergoes a stern test when the Olympic Games' athletics competition begins on Thursday. The 29-strong Indian contingent, featuring lesser-known names, aims to replicate Chopra's success.

Despite battling a nagging injury, Chopra remains a favorite for a podium finish, potentially clinching an unprecedented second consecutive gold medal. A top podium result on August 8 would make him the fifth man in Olympic history to defend his javelin title and the first Indian to win two golds in an individual event. Only Eric Lemming, Jonni Myyra, Jan Zelezny, and Andreas Thorkildsen have achieved this feat.

Chopra competed in just three events this year, finishing second at the Doha Diamond League and winning gold at Finland's Paavo Nurmi Games. Other notable Indian athletes include 3000m steeplechaser Avinash Sable, who recently set a national record, and men's 4x400m relay team. While unforeseen changes like the rechaped format for track events add an element of unpredictability, India's athletes are primed for the challenge.
