Lovlina Borgohain's Determined Path to a Second Olympic Medal

Tokyo Olympics bronze-medalist Lovlina Borgohain (75kg) successfully started her campaign for a second Olympic medal by defeating Norway's Sunniva Hofstad. Winning 5-0, Borgohain is set for a challenging bout against China's Li Qian. Victory would ensure another bronze for her in the upcoming stage.

Tokyo Olympics bronze-winner Lovlina Borgohain (75kg) began her quest for a second successive Games medal confidently as she out-punched Norway's Sunniva Hofstad in her opening bout here on Wednesday.

Borgohain prevailed 5-0 in the contest to remain on course for a feat unprecedented in Indian boxing. She is now just one win away from adding to her Tokyo bronze, which was won in the 69kg category.

However, her path is challenging as she will face top-seeded Chinese Li Qian in the quarterfinals on August 4. A win would ensure at least a bronze medal for her.

Her performance on the day was confident. While her rival tried to engage her in a slugfest, Borgohain maintained composure and distance, landing clean blows on counter-attack.

Borgohain also had to handle frequent clinches by Hofstad, who appeared busier but with a low guard.

Nonetheless, the Assam-boxer avoided traps and countered with precision, drawing in her opponent. Borgohain’s tough draw highlights her resilience, evidenced by her Tokyo performance where she beat world champion Chen Nien-Chin in the quarterfinals for bronze.

Her August 4 opponent, Qian, is a Tokyo Games middle-weight silver-medalist and has a Rio Games bronze and a 2022 Asian Games gold medal.
