Indian table tennis sensation Sreeja Akula faced a tough 0-4 defeat against China's world number one Yingsha Sun in the pre-quarterfinals of the women's singles competition at the Paris Olympics on Wednesday. The match was over in 38 minutes, marking a bittersweet moment for Sreeja.

The Indian number one Sreeja's scores read 10-12, 10-12, 8-11, 3-11. Her impressive run made her only the second Indian table tennis player to advance to the round of 16 at the Olympics.

Earlier, Sreeja rallied past Singapore's Jian Zeng with a 4-2 victory to enter the pre-quarterfinals, continuing Indian table tennis' historic streak. The victory came on her 26th birthday with scores of 9-11, 12-10, 11-4, 11-5, 10-12, 12-10.
