In a solemn tribute, the Rohit Sharma-led Indian cricket team donned black armbands in their first ODI match against Sri Lanka, commemorating the late Anshuman Gaekwad, who passed away recently after battling lung cancer. Gaekwad, a revered figure in Indian cricket, died in Vadodara.

Gaekwad's illustrious career included coaching the Indian team twice, starting in October 1997 and again in 2000. Notably, under his guidance, Anil Kumble achieved a historical milestone by taking all ten wickets in a Test innings against Pakistan in 1999. Gaekwad also played 40 Tests and 15 ODIs for India from 1975 to 1987, amassing 1,985 Test runs, including a memorable 201 against Pakistan.

India's current tour of Sri Lanka kicked off on July 27 with a T20I series, where India recorded decisive victories. This ODI series debut saw Rohit Sharma return to captaincy following a significant win against South Africa in the ICC T20 World Cup final. The playing XIs for both teams include seasoned and emerging talents.
