India delivered a stunning performance, defeating Tokyo Games silver medallists and their biggest rivals, Australia, 3-2, to end their pool engagements on a high note. This win comes after they had already secured a spot in the quarterfinals of the men's hockey competition at the Paris Olympics.
Skipper Harmanpreet Singh netted a brace, bringing his tally to six goals in the tournament, with Abhishek putting India ahead in the 12th minute. Australia's goals came from Tom Craig and Blake Govers, but it wasn't enough to overturn India's lead.
Veteran Indian goalkeeper PR Sreejesh, making his final international tournament appearance, was exceptional between the posts, making numerous crucial saves. This marks India's first Olympic win over Australia since the 1972 Munich Games.
