Canadian Skaters Miss Podium Amid Russian Doping Scandal
Canadian figure skaters will not be joining the United States and Japan on the podium at the Paris Olympics next week. This comes after the Court of Arbitration for Sport dismissed an appeal by Canada to be upgraded from fourth to third place due to Russian skater Kamila Valieva's doping case.
Canadian figure skaters will not join the United States and Japan on the podium at the Paris Olympics next week when team event medals finally are awarded from the 2022 Beijing Winter Games marred by a Russian doping case.
Despite a new ruling by the Court of Arbitration for Sport that dismissed a Canadian appeal, the Russian skaters will not be present on the bronze-medal position either. The appeal aimed to shift Canada from fourth to third place after the disqualification of Russia's Kamila Valieva, whose doping resulted in a medal reallocation.
The International Olympic Committee confirmed that only gold and silver medals will be awarded in Paris for the team event, with American and Japanese skaters set to receive their medals at a ceremony next to the Eiffel Tower. The IOC noted the absence of Russian teams due to the suspension of the Russian Olympic Committee.
