The United States had its Olympic men's soccer dreams shattered on Friday after suffering a decisive 4-0 defeat to Morocco in the quarter-finals.
At Parc des Princes, Soufiane Rahimi, Ilias Akhomach, Achraf Hakimi, and Mehdi Maouhoub delivered the final blows, extinguishing any hopes the U.S. had of securing a medal at the Paris Games.
With fervent support in the French capital, Morocco now looks ahead to a semi-final showdown with the victor of Japan versus Spain. The match in Marseille is set for Monday. The U.S., competing in the quarter-finals for the first time since Sydney 2000, was outmatched by a polished Moroccan squad that had already bested Argentina in the group stage. Rahimi opened the scoring with a penalty in the 29th minute, followed by Akhomach's goal in the 63rd. Hakimi's solo run resulted in a third goal in the 70th minute, and Maouhoub capped off the rout with a penalty during stoppage time.
