Indian archer Deepika Kumari has advanced to the quarterfinals of the individual women's archery event at the ongoing Paris Olympics. She defeated Michelle Kroppen of Germany in the Round of 16 with a score of 6-4 (2-0, 1-1, 2-0, 0-2, 1-1) at Les Invalides on Saturday.
Kumari started strong, winning the first set 27-24. Although her German opponent showed consistency with three consecutive 9s in the second set, Kumari regained momentum by winning the third set, pulling ahead 5-1. The Indian athlete faltered in the fourth set but managed to tie the fifth, securing her spot in the quarterfinals.
In another highlight, Indian shooter Manu Bhaker finished fourth in the women's 25m pistol shooting event. Bhaker was on the verge of becoming the first Indian to claim three medals at the Summer Games but missed her chance. She was defeated in a shoot-off against Hungary's Veronika Major after both were tied at 28 points.
Jiin Yang of South Korea captured the gold medal in the event, with France's Camille Jedrzejewski taking silver and Hungary's Veronika Major clinching bronze. The Indian contingent has, so far, secured three bronze medals in shooting at the Paris Olympics.
