Rams RB Gurley will miss second straight game

Los Angeles Rams running back Todd Gurley has been ruled out of Sunday's game against the San Francisco 49ers because of his sore left knee, the team announced Friday.

It will mark the second consecutive missed game for the star running back. He reinjured the knee in Week 15 against the Philadelphia Eagles and hasn't practiced since.

Rams coach Sean McVay and Gurley both revealed this week that Gurley initially injured the knee in Week 1 against the Oakland Raiders.

Gurley currently leads the NFL with 21 touchdowns -- including 17 rushing -- and has 1,831 yards from scrimmage. He has rushed for 1,251 yards and has accumulated 580 receiving yards on 59 catches.

C.J. Anderson is likely to receive much of the work against the 49ers. Anderson rushed for 167 yards on 20 carries in his team debut against the Arizona Cardinals last week.

Gurley said he isn't sure exactly when he reinjured the knee during the 30-23 loss to the Eagles. He did miss an offensive series in the third quarter.

"Came back on the sidelines and just you can tell when something doesn't feel right, you know your body," Gurley told reporters. "Obviously, kind of went back in the game and played. Did what I could do and then just kind of dealt with the consequences the next day."

The Rams (12-3) also will be without Lamarcus Joyner on Sunday. The safety sustained an ankle injury last week.

"Those guys are making progress, but we don't feel like it's going to be at the point where they're ready to go," McVay said of Gurley and Joyner, according to ESPN.com. "So we want to continue to be smart with that."

Los Angeles needs a win over the 49ers or a Chicago Bears loss to the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday to wrap up the NFC's No. 2 playoff seed and a first-round bye.
