India's Avinash Sable has stormed into the final of the men's 3000m steeplechase at the Paris Olympics. Competing at the Stade de France, Sable finished fifth in his heat with a time of 8:15.43s, setting the tone early in the race.
Despite stumbling at one hurdle, Sable maintained his pace to secure a spot in Thursday's final. Morocco's Mohamed Tindouft, Ethiopia's Samuel Firewu, Kenya's Abraham Kibiwot, and Japan's Ryuji Miura finished ahead of Sable in Heat 2.
In Heat 1, Morocco's Soufiyane El Bakkali led the pack with 8:17.90s. Other qualifiers included Uganda's Leonard Chemutai, Ethiopia's Getnet Wale, Spain's Daniel Arce, and Tunisia's Ahmed Jaziri. India's Kiran Pahal, competing in the women's 400m, did not advance, clocking 52.51 seconds in her heat.
Kiran Pahal finished seventh in Heat 5 of the women's 400m event but will get another shot in the repechage round. Meanwhile, Jeswin Aldrin fell short in the men's long jump, with a best attempt of 7.61m, finishing 13th in Group B and 26th overall.
The day was mixed for India at the Paris Olympics, with Sable's qualification providing a glimmer of hope in an otherwise challenging outing.
