Mirabai Chanu's Quest for Second Olympic Medal Amidst Fitness Concerns
Mirabai Chanu, India's celebrated weightlifter, is set to attempt to win her second Olympic medal despite fitness issues and a competitive field. After a silver at the Tokyo Olympics and battling injuries, Chanu aims to lift around 205-206kg to remain in contention for a medal.
Mirabai Chanu, who captured the spotlight with a silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics, aims to make history on Wednesday as the first Indian weightlifter to claim two Olympic medals. Despite an injury-plagued buildup, Chanu is gearing up for a challenging competition amidst a highly competitive field and lingering fitness questions.
Chanu's most noteworthy effort since Tokyo was a 201kg lift at the 2022 Commonwealth Games. The reigning Olympic champion, Hou Zhihui of China, remains the favorite, but Chanu's primary challenge lies in overcoming her own limitations. Her coach, Vijay Sharma, expressed confidence, stating that a lift between 205kg to 206kg would be necessary to secure a medal.
Despite her struggles, including a best snatch of 88kg set at the 2020 National Championships and a clean and jerk record of 119kg achieved at the 2021 Asian Championships, Chanu remains a tenacious competitor. With the absence of major contender Ri Song Gum, the 49kg event is still fiercely competitive. Chanu has been training in Paris with support from American physical therapist Dr. Aaron Horschig ahead of the crucial event.
