In a stunning display of athleticism, Cole Hocker of the United States broke the Olympic record in the men's 1500m event, capturing the gold medal in front of a roaring crowd at Stade de France. Hocker outpaced favorites Josh Kerr of Great Britain and Jakob Ingebrigtsen of Norway.
Hocker set a new Olympic record with a time of 3:27.65s, eclipsing Ingebrigtsen's previous record of 3:28.32s from the Tokyo Olympics. Josh Kerr smashed the British national record with a time of 3:27.79s, but it was not enough to clinch gold.
The US celebrated a double podium finish with Yared Nuguse taking bronze, clocking a personal best of 3:27.80s. This is the first time the US has had two athletes on the 1500m podium at the Summer Games. Ingebrigtsen, the reigning Olympic champion, finished fourth with a timing of 3:28.24s.
The race kept the stadium buzzing from start to finish. Ingebrigtsen initially led, but Hocker made his move midway and maintained his lead to the end. "It's an unbelievable feeling," Hocker said. "I felt like I was carried by the stadium and God. My body just did it for me. My mind was all there, and I saw that finish line," he told Olympics.com.
"Winning gold was my goal this year. I kept repeating it to myself even when I doubted," he added.
