Chennaiyin FC (CFC) aims to end their Durand Cup 2024 campaign on a high note against Assam Rifles FT at the JRD Tata Sports Complex in Jamshedpur on Sunday. The Marina Machans, consisting largely of young Indian talent, narrowly lost their first two group matches against Indian Army FT and Jamshedpur FC, despite putting up a valiant fight.
Assam Rifles have also faced defeats in their previous two outings, but assistant coach Noel Wilson remains cautious of their defensive strengths. 'Assam Rifles are a good team and defensively strong. Despite their losses, they have continued to work hard. We respect them, but Chennaiyin FC must focus on our game to win,' Wilson stated in a CFC release.
One of the standouts for Chennaiyin has been Vincy Barretto, who scored the team's first goal in the competition against Jamshedpur FC. Alongside Solaimalai R and Vishal R, Barretto has been among the bright spots for the team. Wilson noted the positive impact of the reserve team players, emphasizing their hard work and determination. 'Seeing youngsters perform alongside first-team players gives you a good feeling. In the last match against Jamshedpur, everyone worked hard and fought,' said Wilson. 'The reserve players need to keep proving themselves. Even if a few can make it to the senior team, it's a great success.'
