The Indian men's hockey team expressed immense happiness after clinching the bronze medal at the Summer Games. A decisive brace from captain Harmanpreet Singh and crucial saves by PR Sreejesh secured India's 2-1 victory over Spain at the Yves du Manoir Stadium in Paris.
This milestone marks India's first back-to-back bronze in hockey at the Olympics in 52 years, the last being at the 1972 Munich Games. Speaking to ANI, player Amit Rohidas mentioned the team's jubilant celebrations at India House, where the atmosphere felt as festive as in India.
"It feels incredible to win the bronze medal; everyone is ecstatic... Being at India House, we feel like we're home, enjoying Indian food..." said Amit Rohidas. However, team member Sumit shared that there was a tinge of disappointment for not securing the gold medal.
"I am pleased with our performance. While there's some disappointment in not winning gold, it's a proud moment for Sreejesh," Sumit added. The emotional climax came as Sreejesh, playing his last game for India, was joined by his teammates on the field to celebrate the historic win.
Under coach Craig Fulton, India's historic achievement was marked by goals from Harmanpreet Singh (30', 33'). Spain's sole goal came from Marc Miralles (18').
