Toronto Nationals emerged as the champions of the fourth season of the Global T20 Canada after a comprehensive 8-wicket win over the defending champions, Montreal Tigers, in a riveting final on Sunday. This victory marked their maiden title in North America's premier T20 competition.
Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau visited the tournament venue during the league, meeting the management of Montreal Tigers and receiving a jersey.
Toronto skipper Colin Munro won the toss and opted to field first, a decision that paid off when Montreal managed a meager total of 96/9 in 20 overs. Andries Gous overcame a broken finger to score an undefeated 58 runs, ensuring a decisive and rather one-sided victory for Toronto.
Challenging conditions at the TD Stadium, exacerbated by heavy rain, did not deter Australian pacer Jason Behrendorff, who delivered a stunning spell with figures of 3/8. This triggered a collapse in Montreal's top order, firmly positioning Toronto in control.
The Montreal Tigers experienced early setbacks, losing key players such as Praveen Kumar, Gerhard Erasmus, Tim Seifert, Chris Lynn, and Sherfane Rutherford in quick succession, with half their team back in the dugout before the end of the power play.
Despite a 46-run partnership between Corbin Bosch (35) and Jaskaran Singh (16), Montreal's innings struggled to reach 96. Toronto's chase saw a brief wobble with Colin Munro and Unmukt Chand falling early. However, Andries Gous and Rassie van der Dussen (30 not out) solidified the innings with an unbeaten 85-run partnership.
Key performances throughout the tournament were recognized, with Romario Shepherd being named Bowler of the Tournament, George Munsey as Batter of the Tournament, Dilpreet Bajwa as Emerging Player, and Junaid Siddique awarded Player of the Tournament.
