In a remarkable debut for the Northamptonshire Steelbacks, India's leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal clinched five wickets, leading his team to a dominant nine-wicket victory over Kent Spitfires in the One-Day Cup at Canterbury on Wednesday.
Chahal's signing with Northants was announced just an hour before he made his sensational debut. The 34-year-old, who was a significant part of India's T20 World Cup-winning squad, took five wickets for just 14 runs in his 10 overs, dismantling Kent's batting lineup and bowling them out for a mere 82 runs in 35.1 overs.
Chahal's victims included notable players like Jaydn Denly, Ekansh Singh, Grant Stewart, Beyers Swanepoel, and Nathan Gilchrist. The tourists, chasing the modest total, easily achieved the target, scoring 86 for one in just 14 overs. Although this win marked Northants' first of the season, they finished eighth in the nine-team Group A table, missing the quarterfinals. Chahal will continue to play in the team's remaining five matches in the County Championship Division Two.
