Report: Packers seek interview with Northwestern coach

The Green Bay Packers will seek permission to interview Northwestern coach Pat Fitzgerald for their head coach opening, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. The interview, should it happen, would come after the Wildcats face Utah in Monday's Holiday Bowl.

Packers president Mark Murphy has a history with Fitzgerald, having originally hired him to coach Northwestern when Murphy was the athletic director at the time.

Fitzgerald, 44, has reportedly turned down numerous interview requests from NFL teams in the past.

The team has already interviewed Jim Caldwell and Chuck Pagano for the vacancy, according to multiple reports earlier this week.

The Packers are searching for a replacement for Mike McCarthy, who spent 12-plus years with the team while bringing home the Super Bowl XLV title. He was fired after a Dec. 2 loss to the Arizona Cardinals. Interim coach Joe Philbin, who has three-plus years of head-coaching experience with the Miami Dolphins, is expected to be considered by the team as well.
