O'Connor, part of an early breakaway group, made his decisive move on the penultimate climb, 28 kilometers from the finish. He celebrated with a fist pump as he crossed the finish line, expressing his admiration for the race. He now joins an elite list of cyclists who have won stages in the Giro d'Italia, Tour de France, and Vuelta a Espana.

Italy's Marco Frigo and Germany's Florian Lipowitz finished second and third, respectively. O'Connor's stellar performance dethroned previous leader Primoz Roglic, who finished the day six minutes and 31 seconds behind.
