Northern Ireland captain Jonny Evans announced his retirement from international soccer on Wednesday, concluding a distinguished international career at the age of 36. Evans, who currently plays for Manchester United, earned 107 caps for his country, marking his last appearance against European champions Spain in a friendly match held in June.
"After much thought and consideration and after 18 years, I feel like now is the right time to retire from international football," Evans stated, also highlighting his participation in the 2016 European Championship where Northern Ireland reached the last 16 as the pinnacle of his career. "Putting on the green shirt 107 times and representing the people of Northern Ireland has been my biggest honour," he added.
Evans' announcement comes just a day before Michael O'Neill is set to announce the squad lineup for the upcoming Nations League fixtures against Luxembourg and Bulgaria.
