Teenage sensation Kimi Antonelli experienced a dramatic debut in Formula 1 on Friday, lasting only 10 minutes before a high-speed crash brought his session to a halt. The young driver, who just turned 18, lost control of his Mercedes at the challenging Parabolica corner during the Italian Grand Prix practice session.
Antonelli's Mercedes spun off the track, flew through the gravel trap, and collided with the barriers, causing significant damage to the car, including knocking off the front wing. Immediately after the crash, a distraught Antonelli apologized over the team radio.
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff was quick to reassure the newcomer. Antonelli is expected to replace the Ferrari-bound Lewis Hamilton as George Russell's teammate next season. Following the incident, the session was paused for nearly 15 minutes, and Antonelli was checked at the medical center before receiving a comforting hug from Wolff back in the garage.
