New Zealand's cricket talisman, Kane Williamson, is readying himself for a formidable journey as the team gears up to tackle six Tests on the challenging grounds of India and Sri Lanka over the next two months. This marks an uncommon frequency of subcontinent fixtures for New Zealand, which hasn't faced more than three Tests in a year in this region over the past decade. The tour kicks off with a one-off Test against Afghanistan, followed by two Tests in Sri Lanka, and concludes with a three-match series against India.
Williamson acknowledged the rarity of this packed Test schedule, noting, "Such a volume of Test cricket is unusual for us, especially in this part of the world." His comments came during a press interaction in Greater Noida. The Black Caps' track record in Asia has been less than stellar, managing just 16 wins out of 90 Tests. Their performance in India is even less promising, with only two victories in 36 red-ball matches.
Emphasizing the need for adaptability, Williamson remarked, "It's crucial for our players to adjust their game, as we don't frequently compete in this format here. The goal is to familiarize ourselves again, especially since our last Test was six to eight months ago. As a team, reconnecting and executing our skills and strategies is vital." Despite being one of New Zealand's most seasoned players, Williamson's personal experience in Asia has been limited, averaging 31.36 in 22 innings. However, he is eager to take on the challenge, especially with the historic first-ever Test against Afghanistan.
Williams further stated, "It's essential we grow as a team and clearly understand our gameplay here. Competing in these parts of the world is always a tough challenge, but it's also a valuable experience to play against strong sides." The one-off Test against Afghanistan is set to commence on Monday at Shaheed Vijay Singh Pathik Sports Complex. (ANI)
