Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen has undergone successful surgery after suffering a complete rupture of the patella tendon in his right knee, the LaLiga club announced on Monday.

The 32-year-old German international sustained the injury during Barcelona's 5-1 victory over Villarreal on Sunday. Dr. Joan Carles Monllau performed the surgery under the supervision of the club's medical services at Barcelona Hospital.

Barcelona confirmed that Ter Stegen will be unavailable for selection and his recovery period will determine his return to the pitch. He is expected to be out for at least seven months, missing key fixtures including a Champions League match against Bayern Munich and LaLiga games against Real Madrid.
