Ronaldo's Presidential Hopes Struck Offside in CBF Race
Brazilian soccer icon Ronaldo withdrew from the CBF presidential race after failing to secure sufficient backing from regional federations. Despite his aim to restore Brazil's football prestige, he faced overwhelming support for incumbent Ednaldo Rodrigues, leaving Ronaldo unable to present his reform ideas.
Brazilian soccer legend Ronaldo has pulled out of the race for the presidency of the country's football association, the CBF, citing a lack of support from the regional federations needed to formalize his candidacy.
The former Ballon d'Or winner and World Cup victor, aged 48, had announced plans to run in December to revive the beleaguered reputation of Brazilian football. Despite his aspirations, Ronaldo was met by closed doors across 23 of the 27 federations, which overwhelmingly back current president Ednaldo Rodrigues.
In a statement shared on social media, Ronaldo noted the federations’ refusal to even hear his project proposals, citing satisfaction with the present management. With the electoral statutes favoring the federations' votes, Rodrigues stands as the expected unopposed candidate in the upcoming election.
