UAE Parts Ways with Coach Paulo Bento Amid World Cup Campaign
The United Arab Emirates dismissed coach Paulo Bento after a crucial victory against North Korea, as the team aims for World Cup qualification. Bento, known for past successes with Portugal and South Korea, leaves a UAE team still in contention but needing critical wins against Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan.
The United Arab Emirates parted company with their Portuguese coach, Paulo Bento, on Wednesday. This decision follows a dramatic late victory against North Korea that preserved their chances for direct World Cup qualification.
Sultan Adil scored in the final moments, ensuring a 2-1 win in Riyadh, and reducing the gap with second-place Uzbekistan to just four points. The penultimate qualifier between these teams on June 5 will be crucial for the UAE's World Cup aspirations.
Bento, who had an impressive record with previous teams like Portugal and South Korea, had achieved 14 wins since joining UAE in July 2023. Despite their progress, UAEFA announced his dismissal on social media, setting the stage for new leadership during this intense qualification bid.
