Quincy Promes, a well-known Dutch soccer star, has been extradited from Dubai to the Netherlands to face a substantial prison sentence for his involvement in cocaine smuggling, the Dutch prosecutor's office confirmed to The Associated Press. Promes' once bright career has been overshadowed by ongoing legal troubles.

The Dutch public prosecution service confirmed that Promes, who played 50 matches for the national team and scored seven goals, is now in Dutch custody. Last year, he was convicted in absentia and sentenced to six years in prison for cocaine smuggling involving hundreds of kilograms, according to the Amsterdam District Court.

Despite his denial of the allegations, Promes, who had a stint with Spartak Moscow, has faced further legal issues. In 2023, he was found guilty of stabbing his cousin and sentenced to 18 months, with both convictions currently under appeal. Promes' arrest in Dubai has brought him back to international attention.
