In a shocking turn of events at Wimbledon, last year's runner-up, Jasmine Paolini, was defeated in the second round by unseeded Kamilla Rakhimova, with scores of 4-6, 6-4, 6-4. This marks the fourth consecutive exit of a top-five seed, following Coco Gauff, Jessica Pegula, and Zheng Qinwen's early departures.
Overall, 23 seeds, comprising 13 men and 10 women, failed to advance beyond the second round. This number equals the record for the most seeds eliminated by this stage at any Grand Slam since 32 seeds were instituted in 2001.
Rakhimova's triumph against Paolini represented her first victory over a top-10 player and adds to the string of unexpected outcomes, including No. 12 Diana Shnaider's defeat by Diane Parry and No. 22 Donna Vekic's loss to Cristina Busca.
