Atletico Madrid finds itself in a difficult position for its Champions League opener against Liverpool on Wednesday due to a string of injuries.
The Spanish club announced on Tuesday that forward Julián Alvarez, among others, will not be making the trip to England.
Also absent from the squad for the match at Anfield are defender José María Giménez and midfielders Álex Baena and Johnny Cardoso, both of whom are newcomers to the team this season. These losses follow injuries sustained in their recent 2-0 victory over Villarreal in La Liga.
Cardoso also suffered a left ankle sprain during practice on Monday, compounding Atletico’s setbacks. The club, which aims to secure its first Champions League title, was previously knocked out by local rivals Real Madrid in last year’s round of 16.
