In a strategic move resonating with modern cricket dynamics, India's T20I captain, Suryakumar Yadav, shed light on the rationale behind selecting Shubman Gill over Sanju Samson as the team's opener. Suryakumar emphasized the importance of adaptability among the middle-order batters, stating that flexibility is essential in the current squad configuration.
Samson, who has represented India in 51 T20I matches, amassed 995 runs at an average of 25.11. However, his performance notably improves when opening, scoring 522 runs in 17 matches at an impressive average of 39.48 and a strike rate of 182.20, marked by three centuries and a half-century. In contrast, Shubman Gill has consistently opened in his 33 T20Is, accumulating 837 runs at an average of 29.89 and a strike rate of 140.43, despite having lower figures than Samson's opening statistics but benefiting from a steady selection.
Suryakumar emphasized that flexibility is not limited to Samson, highlighting wicketkeeper-batters like Jitesh Sharma, who have the capability to adapt to different batting roles. "It's vital for players to be adaptable, and having multi-dimensional players like Samson and Jitesh Sharma enriches the team's options," expressed Suryakumar. Jitesh, in his 12 appearances, has scored 125 runs at an average of 15.62.
