A Special Investigation Team (SIT) formed by the West Bengal government has commenced an inquiry into the recent vandalism episodes at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata during an event for Argentine football legend Lionel Messi, an official confirmed. Senior IPS officers, including Piyush Pandey, Javed Shamim, Supratim Sarkar, and Muralidhar, inspected the site and convened at the Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate.
In a parallel development, Bidhannagar police apprehended another suspect related to the stadium vandalism, raising the arrest count to six, a police officer stated. The latest detainee, Rupak Mondal from Chingrighata, was recognized via CCTV footage. The police are interrogating him to uncover the motivations behind the senseless act.
On the eventful day, spectators, having purchased expensive tickets, alleged discontent as Messi, Luis Suarez, and Rodrigo De Paul were barely visible, circled by a throng. Fans, unhappy with the disorganization helmed by Shatadru Dutta, resorted to vandalism, damaging property and charging the field, dismayed by state minister Aroop Biswas's failure to ensure proper management.
