Sophie Devine, the all-rounder for Gujarat Giants, has underscored the critical role of clear communication and trust in domestic talent as pivotal elements in their Women's Premier League 2026 journey, noted in a recent release. Devine, starting the season impressively, amassed 141 runs and claimed five wickets in the Giants' first three matches, making decisive contributions with both bat and ball.
Discussing her batting strategy, Devine, 36, remarked, "Milestones aren't as crucial as setting a strong position for the team's victory. Slowing down for personal achievements doesn't benefit the team; it's about executing what's best in the moment." She stressed the importance of remaining composed under competitive conditions, saying, "In these tournaments and on such wickets, conceding a boundary is inevitable, but what's paramount is your reaction. Whether batting or bowling, staying composed and adhering to plans is crucial for pivotal team moments."
Devine highlighted the significant impact domestic players have on franchise cricket, stating, "Local players often turn into match-winners in franchise cricket; overseas players tend to counterbalance each other." Reflecting on the young talents in the squad, including Kashvee Gautam and Ayushi Soni, Devine praised their growth and adaptability, stating that such tournaments are learning platforms not only for experienced players but also for younger ones, who often have more extensive experience in Indian conditions compared to their international counterparts.
She commended Kashvee Gautam's development during the tournament, observing that exposure to pressure situations significantly benefits players. "Witnessing players like Kashvee adapt and excel under pressure with every game is thrilling. These competitions offer invaluable experiences, fostering quick learning and development," remarked Devine.
Regarding Renuka Singh's influence, Devine expressed high regard for her capabilities, especially her command during critical overs. "Renuka's contribution is immense; her control and clarity with the new ball enable the entire bowling group to perform with increased confidence," she said. As the tournament advances, Gujarat Giants aim for consistent performances with Devine at the helm, both on and off the field.
