Novak Djokovic began his quest for a record 25th Grand Slam at the Australian Open with an impressive win over Pedro Martinez. Overcoming fitness doubts, the 38-year-old breezed through the first round, reminding competitors of his threat with exceptional play. Djokovic's form is a promising start.
Novak Djokovic has initiated his pursuit of a record-breaking 25th Grand Slam title with a commanding victory against unseeded Spaniard Pedro Martinez in the Australian Open's opening round. The Serbian star dispelled pre-tournament fitness concerns with a stellar 6-3 6-2 6-2 performance.
Despite initial doubts about his readiness, particularly after bypassing the Adelaide tune-up event and curtailing practice sessions in the lead-up, Djokovic faced little resistance on Monday. His match against Martinez, a first-time opponent, turned into a straightforward affair as he clinched his 100th match win at Melbourne Park, starting strong and maintaining dominance in the opening set under the spotlight of Rod Laver Arena.
With his last competition being in November, where he secured his 101st career title in Athens, Djokovic showed no signs of rust. The spotlight, which has shifted towards reigning champion Jannik Sinner and world number one Carlos Alcaraz, finds a familiar face reminding them of his prowess, as Djokovic powered through the third set with remarkable tennis skills.
