Trump Calls for Legislative Action on Rising College Football Costs
Former President Donald Trump flagged the financial strain that college football costs place on school sports, suggesting legislation or an executive order to address the issue. He highlighted the burden of name, image, and likeness contracts as a concern. Legislative efforts are underway to tackle these challenges.
Former President Donald Trump on Friday highlighted issues within college sports, eliciting concerns over the escalating cost of college football and its impact on broader athletic programs. He indicated that legislation, or possibly an executive order, might be necessary to mitigate these financial pressures.
Trump pointed out that the contracts relating to athletes' names, images, and likenesses (NIL) were significant burdens for colleges, sometimes forcing them to cut other sports activities. 'We have to save college sports,' he emphasized to a group of sports executives at the White House East Room.
This discourse comes after a 2021 Supreme Court decision allowed college athletes to receive compensation, which has escalated costs significantly. Speaker of the House Mike Johnson noted that a legislative bill is being prepared with potential bipartisan support to address these challenges, echoing the urgency of finding a solution.
