A's add Grossman, Pennington; place Gossett on IL

The Oakland Athletics announced the signing of outfielder Robbie Grossman on Friday and placed right-hander Daniel Gossett on the 60-day injured list. Grossman's deal is worth $2 million, according to published reports.

Grossman, 29, batted .273 with five homers and 48 RBIs in 129 games last season for the Minnesota Twins. He has a .256 career average with 36 homers and 193 RBIs in six seasons with the Houston Astros (2013-15) and Twins (2016-18). Oakland also reportedly signed veteran infielder Cliff Pennington to a minor league deal. The 34-year-old has a .242 career average with 36 homers and 242 RBIs in 11 seasons with the Athletics (2008-12), Arizona Diamondbacks (2013-15), Toronto Blue Jays (2015), Los Angeles Angels (2016-17) and Cincinnati Reds (2018).

Gossett, 26, underwent Tommy John surgery on Aug. 1 and is expected to miss the entire 2019 season. He was 0-3 with a 5.18 ERA in five starts last season and is 4-14 with a 5.91 ERA in 23 career starts. --Field Level Media
