Shakeup in Italian Soccer Leadership: Gravina Resigns After World Cup Miss
Gabriele Gravina resigned as the head of Italy's soccer federation after the national team failed to qualify for the World Cup again. Gravina, who had been in charge since 2018, stepped down following pressure from the government. A new leader will be elected in June.
Gabriele Gravina has resigned as the president of the Italian Soccer Federation (Figc) after failing to secure a World Cup spot for the national team. His decision came after Italy was defeated by Bosnia and Herzegovina in the playoffs.
Gravina, who led the Figc since 2018, faced mounting pressure from the government to step down following this latest setback. The federation announced an extraordinary assembly set for June 22, where a new president will be elected.
Italy's national soccer team last played in the World Cup in 2014. Despite their recent struggles, they emerged victorious in the Euro 2020 tournament. Gravina has offered to provide a detailed account of Italian soccer's current state to a parliamentary committee on April 8.
