Sabastian Sawe Shatters Marathon Barrier: A New Era in Long-Distance Running
Kenyan runner Sabastian Sawe has made history by becoming the first person to run a marathon in under two hours. He won the London Marathon in 1:59:30, breaking the world record by 65 seconds. In women's race, Ethiopia's Tigst Assefa set a new women's-only marathon record.
In a landmark achievement for athletics, Sabastian Sawe of Kenya has shattered the mythical 2-hour marathon barrier. Sawe clinched victory in the London Marathon with an unprecedented time of 1:59:30, surpassing the previous world record by 65 seconds, marking a pivotal shift in the landscape of long-distance running.
The event spotlighted exceptional performances beyond Sawe's, with Ethiopia's Yomif Kejelcha impressively completing his first marathon under 2 hours at 1:59:41. Uganda's Jacob Kiplimo also made headlines by surpassing the earlier world record set by Kelvin Kiptum, finishing in 2:00:28.
The women's event also saw a record-breaking feat as Ethiopia's Tigst Assefa defended her title with a time of 2:15:41, setting a new fastest time in a women's-only marathon. Meanwhile, the wheelchair category witnessed a Swiss triumph with Marcel Hug and Catherine Debrunner securing their titles in the men's and women's races, respectively.
