Protests Erupt Over Iran's World Cup Participation
Protesters in Vancouver argue that Iran's soccer team represents the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) rather than the Iranian people, calling for FIFA to ban the team from the World Cup. FIFA President Gianni Infantino intends for Iran to participate. Protests in Iran faced a violent crackdown earlier this year.
Protesters gathered outside the FIFA Congress in Vancouver on Thursday, voicing concerns that Iran's soccer team represents the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) rather than the people of Iran, and urging FIFA to ban the team from the upcoming World Cup.
Organizer Pouria Mahmoudi argued that the team's participation normalizes Iran's internal conflicts, citing recent protests met with a brutal crackdown. Meanwhile, FIFA President Gianni Infantino asserted support for Iran's participation in the tournament, a stance US President Donald Trump also echoed.
Complicating matters further, Iranian football federation officials, including Mehdi Taj, were barred entry to Canada due to links with the IRGC. The continued protests highlight ongoing tensions regarding Iran's representation and participation in global events.
