In a spirited display, India's U17 women's football team was defeated 0-2 by Australia in their opening match of the AFC U17 Women's Asian Cup. The match, held on Saturday, saw Theodora Mouithys score for Australia in the 25th minute, followed by an own goal from Indian defender Abhista Basnett in the 59th minute.
This encounter marked India's long-awaited return to the tournament since 2005, ending a 21-year hiatus. India will next face four-time champions Japan on May 5 and subsequently take on Lebanon on May 8. The team aims to advance in the tournament despite strong competition.
Australia, a formidable opponent with two previous semifinal appearances, is vying for a spot in the 2016 FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup in Morocco. The tournament's structure allows the top two teams from each of the three groups, along with the two best third-placed teams, to qualify for the quarterfinals.
