Dutch Court Verdict: NAC Breda's Replay Dreams Dismissed
A Dutch court dismissed NAC Breda's request for a replay against Go Ahead Eagles. NAC argued the latter's player, Dean James, was ineligible due to nationality issues. The ruling, favoring the KNVB, ended considerable uncertainty in Dutch football, impacting NAC's survival chances in the league.
A Dutch court dismissed the legal challenge by NAC Breda on Monday, as the club sought a replay of their Eredivisie match against Go Ahead Eagles. The case centered around Go Ahead's player Dean James, who was allegedly ineligible due to a change in nationality.
NAC argued that James had lost his Dutch nationality after taking Indonesian citizenship to represent the Asian nation in World Cup qualifiers, thus violating Dutch football regulations. However, the Utrecht court supported the Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB), which refused the replay.
The KNVB noted that neither the club nor James was aware of the automatic legal repercussions at the time. The ruling alleviates potential widespread disruption in Dutch football, avoiding scrutiny on over 130 matches. NAC faces a tough battle to avoid relegation, being second-bottom in the Eredivisie.
