Iranian World Cup Rally: Spirit, Sport, and Diplomatic Challenges
Thousands gathered in Tehran to rally Iran's World Cup team ahead of their departure amidst visa concerns for the U.S. tournament. Iranian FA President Mehdi Taj highlighted national unity. The team's entry to the U.S. remains uncertain amid geopolitical tensions, with FIFA urged to facilitate the process.
In a spirited send-off, thousands of fans rallied in Tehran's Enqelab Square to support Iran's World Cup team, despite looming concerns about the squad's entry into the United States for the tournament.
Iranian FA (FFIRI) President Mehdi Taj praised the event as the best send-off in four campaigns, emphasizing the unity between players and the public. However, diplomatic tensions have cast doubt, particularly following President Taj's visa refusal in Canada due to his IRGC ties.
Hedayat Mombeini, FFIRI secretary-general, remains hopeful for timely visa processing, urging FIFA to ensure sport stays separate from politics, while maintaining their focus on upcoming warm-up matches, including a fixture against Gambia in Antalya.
