Tomiyasu's Comeback: Japan's World Cup Squad Unveiled
Takehiro Tomiyasu returns to Japan's World Cup squad following injuries, despite his absence from the national team for nearly two years. Coach Hajime Moriyasu announced the squad, including Tomiyasu and other key players like Wataru Endo, omitting Kaoru Mitoma due to injury ahead of matches against the Netherlands, Tunisia, and Sweden.
Former Arsenal defender Takehiro Tomiyasu has made a surprising return to Japan's World Cup squad. Despite being absent from the national team for almost two years due to injury challenges, Tomiyasu has secured a spot in the 26-man team, as announced by head coach Hajime Moriyasu.
Tomiyasu, now playing for Ajax, was last seen in action for Japan against Syria in 2024. Although he missed recent matches for tactical reasons, medical staff have cleared him, allowing for a pivotal role in the upcoming games, including a friendly against Iceland.
Other inclusions are Wataru Endo, overcoming an injury-riddled season, and veteran Yuto Nagatomo, aiming for a fifth World Cup appearance. Midfielder Kaoru Mitoma was omitted due to a recent injury. Japan, under Moriyasu's leadership, seeks success in their eighth World Cup appearance, beginning against the Netherlands on June 14 in Dallas.
