Kapil Dev Drives Transformation in Indian Golf with Increased International Engagement
Kapil Dev is revitalizing Indian golf by securing major sponsorships and expanding tournaments, aiming to qualify more players for global competitions like the Olympics. Transformational efforts include substantial prize money increases and international partnerships, making Indian golf increasingly attractive to worldwide talent.
Kapil Dev, the cricket legend, is reshaping the landscape of Indian golf by actively attracting leading sponsors and significantly enhancing prize money. He aims to provide better opportunities for Indian players to qualify for the Olympics and other prestigious global events, according to Amandeep Johl, CEO of DP World PGTI.
Since taking the helm of the Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI) in June 2024, Dev has initiated a substantial financial and operational overhaul. His leadership saw PGTI form a long-term partnership with DP World, making it the official title and umbrella partner of the tour. This collaboration has resulted in a near 60% growth in tournaments and prize money within a year. Johl expressed gratitude for Dev's commitment, noting the influx of significant brands supporting the tour.
Johl explained that increased prize money directly impacts the world ranking points and the ability of Indian golfers to enter high-profile international competitions. More globally engaging events like the DP World India Championship, returning to Delhi this October, reflect this growth. Emphasizing the importance of international exposure, Johl also highlighted efforts to bring golf to smaller cities and schools, broadening the talent pool and enhancing opportunities for young Indian golfers.
Moreover, initiatives under Dev's guidance aim to deepen international connections. Plans include inviting players from international tours to compete in India, further expanding the reach and appeal of Indian golf. The strategic cooperation offers PGTI's top players paths to prestigious tours worldwide, supporting their journey from local to global contention.
