The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has appointed Shreyas Iyer as the new captain of India's T20I squad, succeeding Suryakumar Yadav, who recently led the team to a remarkable victory in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup. BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar lauded Iyer's leadership skills and consistent performances, noting that his IPL experience makes him well-suited for the national role.

Announcing India's squad for the T20I series against England and Ireland, as well as the Asian Games, Agarkar explained that Iyer's appointment was driven by strategic considerations and the players' current form. Iyer's experience includes leading different IPL franchises, culminating in finals wins and navigating tough seasons, making him prepared and deserving of the captaincy.

Agarkar also talked about Tilak Varma's appointment as vice-captain, praising him as a terrific player who can learn the leadership job if required. India is set to begin its limited-overs tour with a two-match T20I series in Ireland, followed by a five-match series in England. The men's T20 cricket competition in the Asian Games in Japan will feature ten teams, including traditional rivals Pakistan and Bangladesh.
