World number 10 PV Sindhu has secured a spot in the Australian Open semifinals at Sydney's Quaycentre after a commanding victory over Chen Su Yu from Chinese Taipei. The women's singles match concluded remarkably quickly at just 27 minutes, with Sindhu dominating both games to achieve a 21-6, 21-9 victory. This marks Sindhu's second semifinal berth of the season, following her earlier success at the Malaysia Open 2026, according to tournament officials.

An intriguing semifinal is set as Sindhu, a two-time Olympic medallist, faces top seed and three-time world champion Akane Yamaguchi. This encounter will be their 29th meeting, with Sindhu leading their head-to-head at 15-13. However, Yamaguchi has had the upper hand recently, winning four of their last five matches. In a separate development, Yamaguchi progressed to the semis after vanquishing India's Tanvi Sharma 21-14, 21-14 in just 32 minutes. The Indian men's doubles team of Hariharan Amsakarunan and MR Arjun withdrew during their second game against Chinese Taipei.

Prior to facing Chen, Sindhu defeated fellow Indian Isharani Baruah in a hard-fought match, winning 22-20, 21-12 in 42 minutes. Sindhu was challenged significantly in the opening game but prevailed in a tie-break before taking control in the second game. Meanwhile, 17-year-old Tanvi Sharma continued her impressive journey with a powerful 21-13, 21-15 triumph over Malvika Bansod, another compatriot. Sharma's victory secured her place in her second quarter-final of the year, underscoring her rapid ascent on the global stage.
