In a notable political development, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has acknowledged Sonia Gandhi's pivotal role in advancing his career, attributing his unopposed election to the Rajya Sabha to her steadfast support. He described this election as the 13th milestone in his political journey and expressed gratitude towards the Congress chairperson for consistently providing him the chance to serve the public.

Kharge was among four candidates who were declared elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha from Karnataka, along with Mansoor Ali Khan, son of former Union Minister K Rahman Khan, Congress media chairperson Pawan Khera, and BJP's M Nagaraja. The confirmation came after the last date for withdrawal, rendering the planned June 18 polling unnecessary.

The announcement followed after an independent candidate's nomination was invalidated during the scrutiny phase, leaving only four eligible candidates for the vacant Rajya Sabha seats. According to the Election Commission's notification, biennial polls for 24 seats were lined up, covering various states, including Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Gujarat.
