Spring training roundup: Chavis, Red Sox roll past Yankees

The Boston Red Sox began their title defense with an 8-5 win over the New York Yankees in spring training action Saturday at Fort Myers, Fla. Top prospect Michael Chavis, suspended 80 games last season following a positive test for a performance-enhancing substance, crushed a three-run homer to lead a 13-hit Red Sox attack.

Gleyber Torres and Ryan McBroom homered for the Yankees, who also had 13 hits. Orioles 7, Twins (ss) 2

Chance Sisco hit a three-run home run, and Yusniel Diaz added a two-run blast as Baltimore downed a Minnesota split-squad at Sarasota, Fla. Jake Cave and Nick Gordon each had two hits for the Twins.

Twins (ss) 10, Rays 5 Byron Buxton's five-RBI performance led Minnesota's other split squad to victory over Tampa Bay at Fort Myers, Fla.

Buxton hit a two-run single in the first inning and added a three-run home run in the third. Austin Meadows hit a two-run double to lead the Rays' offense. Pirates 3, Phillies 2

Jason Martin hit a two-run home run in the top of the ninth inning to rally Pittsburgh past Philadelphia at Clearwater, Fla. Matt McBride homered for the Phillies in the bottom of the ninth, but the Pirates held on. Andrew McCutchen and J.T. Realmuto went hitless in their debuts with Philadelphia.

Cardinals 11, Marlins 1 Ramon Urias and Max Schrock each crushed three-run homers as St. Louis routed Miami at Jupiter, Fla.

Schrock, Tommy Edman and Lane Thomas had three hits apiece for the Cardinals. Catcher Jorge Alfaro, acquired by the Marlins in the Realmuto trade, banged up his knee while chasing a foul ball but initially stayed in the game. Tigers 4, Blue Jays 0

Matt Moore threw two scoreless innings in his Detroit debut, leading the Tigers to a shutout of Toronto at Dunedin, Fla. Niko Goodrum hit a two-run homer to lead the Tigers' offense. Teoscar Hernandez had two of the Blue Jays' five hits.

Mets 4, Braves 3 Offseason acquisition Robinson Cano hit the go-ahead single in the third inning to lead New York past Atlanta at Port St. Lucie, Fla.

Cano went 1-for-3 in his Mets debut while Pete Alonso and Rymer Liriano added solo shots. Connor Lien went deep for the Braves. Nationals 7, Astros 6

Adrian Sanchez hit a walk-off double in the ninth inning to lead Washington over Houston at West Palm Beach, Fla. Max Scherzer started for the Nationals and struck out three in two innings while Spencer Kieboom hit a three-run home run and Anthony Rendon added a solo shot. Jake Marisnick and Nick Tanielu hit homers for the Astros.

Indians 3, Reds 3 Matt Kemp hit a two-run home run for Cincinnati in a tie with Cleveland at Goodyear, Ariz.

Kemp went 1-for-2 while Yasiel Puig was hitless in their Reds debut. Tyler Naquin homered for the Indians. Royals 9, Rangers 1

Alex Gordon and Jorge Bonifacio drove in two runs apiece to lead Kansas City in a rout of Texas at Surprise, Ariz. Andy Ibanez singled home the Rangers' sole run in the second inning.

Cubs 8, Brewers 4 Kris Bryant sent a message, homering in his first spring at-bat to lead Chicago past Milwaukee at Mesa, Ariz.

Bryant, who told reporters "bring it" in response to criticism he's received since an injury-hampered 2018 campaign, also singled as part of a 2-for-2 day. Top outfield prospect Corey Ray went 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs for the Brewers. Dodgers 7, White Sox (ss) 6

Joc Pederson hit a solo shot, and Russell Martin and Enrique Hernandez drove in two runs apiece as Los Angeles edged a Chicago split-squad at Phoenix. D.J. Peterson crushed a two-run homer for the White Sox.

Athletics 6, White Sox (ss) 5 Stephen Piscotty's home run was the big blow for Oakland in a win over Chicago's other split-squad at Mesa, Ariz.

Yoan Moncada doubled as part of a two-hit game for the White Sox. Angels 10, Giants 3

Taylor Ward's pinch-hit grand slam led Los Angeles in a rout of San Francisco at Tempe, Ariz. Former first-round draft pick Matt Thaiss and former Giant Jarrett Parker had two-RBI games for the Angels. No San Francisco player had more than one of the team's five total hits.

Padres 6, Mariners 4 Prized free agent acquisition Manny Machado did not make his debut as San Diego defeated Seattle anyway at Peoria, Ariz.

Jose Pirela's two hits paced the Padres' offense. Shed Long led the game off with a home run for the Mariners. Rockies 7, Diamondbacks 3

Sam Hilliard hit a two-run home run in the eighth, and Colton Welker added a two-run blast in the ninth to rally Colorado past Arizona at Scottsdale, Ariz. Steven Souza Jr. crushed a three-run shot in the first inning for the Diamondbacks.
